Office Partitions

Office partitions let you divide an open-plan office into team areas, quiet zones and meeting spaces without building work. Our free-standing partitions are made in the UK, link together into partition walls of any length, and can be moved or reconfigured whenever your layout changes.

Free-standing office partitions vs fixed partition walls

Free-standing office partitions Fixed stud or glass partition walls
Building work None. Delivered ready to use Contractors, dust and disruption
Installation Minutes per screen Days to weeks
Planning or landlord consent Usually not needed Often required
Moving later Pick up and reposition Demolish and rebuild
Sound Absorb speech and cut noise between teams Block sound between enclosed rooms
Cost A fraction of fixed walls Much higher

Fixed walls make sense when you need a fully enclosed, private room. For most open-plan offices, free-standing partitions do the job faster, cheaper and with far more flexibility.

Types of office partitions

Acoustic office partitions

Upholstered partitions with a sound-absorbing core. They soak up speech rather than reflecting it, so open-plan floors feel calmer. Our Muffle 70 partitions are 70mm thick with 24mm of acoustic foam, in heights from 1200 to 2000mm and widths from 800 to 1800mm. Browse all freestanding acoustic screens.

Fabric office partitions

Lighter fabric-covered partitions for zoning and privacy on a budget. Edge Fabric 38 is 38mm thick, from 800 to 1800mm high, with 5 to 10 working day lead times. See all fabric office dividers.

Glass and part-glazed partitions

Glazed partitions keep light flowing while marking out space, ideal for receptions and team boundaries. See glass partition screens and part-glazed office dividers.

Mobile partitions

Partitions on castors that move in seconds, perfect for training rooms and flexible spaces. Muffle and Edge partitions can both be supplied with castor feet. See mobile office screens.

Desk partitions

For dividing desks rather than rooms, see our desk dividers, which clamp or sit directly on desks.

How tall should office partitions be?

Height What it does Best for
1200mm Privacy while seated, keeps sightlines open Between desk rows
1500mm Seated privacy and better sound control Team zones, breakout edges
1800mm Standing privacy, strong visual separation Meeting areas, quiet zones, walkways
2000mm Near room-height separation Informal meeting spaces, focus areas

Taller and thicker partitions block and absorb more speech. Our guide Office screens vs office partitions explains the difference in more detail.

Building partition walls from linked screens

Free-standing partitions join together with screen connectors to form straight runs, L-shapes, T-junctions and bays. To work out how many you need, divide the length of the run by the screen width and round up. A 6m run needs four 1600mm partitions or five 1200mm partitions. Count each leg of an L-shape or bay separately.

Keep walkways and fire exits clear, and use stabilising feet or linking to keep tall runs steady.

Office partitions FAQs

What are office partitions?

Office partitions are panels used to divide an office into separate areas. Free-standing partitions stand on feet and need no fixing to walls or floors, so they can be moved at any time.

Do I need planning permission for office partitions?

Free-standing partitions are furniture, so they do not usually need planning permission or landlord approval. Fixed partition walls often do. Check your lease if you are unsure.

Do office partitions reduce noise?

Acoustic partitions absorb speech and reduce noise travelling between teams in an open-plan office. They do not seal a space like a fixed wall. For private calls, consider office pods and booths.

Can office partitions be linked together?

Yes. Our partitions join with connectors to make straight runs, L-shapes and bays of any length.

How long do office partitions take to arrive?

Lead times depend on the range. Edge partitions are estimated at 5 to 10 working days and Muffle at 10 to 15 working days. Next-day options are also available.

Can I get office partitions in my brand colours?

Yes. Our Muffle partitions come in 100 Classic Melton wool shades, and we offer bespoke dyeing for exact brand colours.
