How to choose desk dividers

Four quick decisions that get you the right desk screen first time.

01

Acoustic or budget?

Acoustic desk screens absorb speech noise between desks. Budget fabric screens give each person a clear boundary and some privacy at a lower price.

Which height?

400mm above the desk gives privacy when seated without blocking light. 500–600mm adds more privacy and noise reduction for call centres and focused work.

Types of desk dividers

Desk dividers, also called desk screens, sit on or clamp to the desk between people. Which type you need depends on whether you want to cut noise, add privacy, keep light, or simply get screens in place quickly.

Acoustic desk screens

Acoustic desk dividers have a sound-absorbing core under the fabric. They soak up calls and conversation at the source, so they are the best choice for busy open-plan offices and call centres. Shop acoustic desk screens

Fabric desk dividers

Fabric desk screens give privacy and a softer look at a lower cost than acoustic screens. Many can be pinned to, so they double as a personal noticeboard. Shop fabric desk dividers

Acrylic desk screens

Clear or frosted acrylic screens create a barrier between desks without blocking light or views. They are easy to wipe clean, which suits reception desks and shared spaces. Shop acrylic desk screens

Freestanding desk dividers

Freestanding desk screens stand on the desk on their own feet, with no clamps or drilling. They are ideal if you rent your desks, hot-desk, or change your layout often. Shop freestanding desk dividers

How desk dividers fit

The right fixing depends on your desks. Check the desk top thickness and what is underneath before you order.

  • Desk clamps grip the edge of the desk top. They are the most common fixing and come in sizes for thin and thick desk tops.
  • Slide-on screens push onto the edge of the desk, with no separate clamps to fit.
  • Bench brackets fit back-to-back bench desks, using the gap between the two desk tops.
  • Floating brackets lift the screen clear of monitor arms and cable trays.
  • Freestanding feet need no fixing at all, so nothing touches the desk edge.

Not sure which you need? Our guide to desk screen clamps and fixings explains each one, or send us a photo of the back of your desk and we will tell you.

Desk divider sizes and how many you need

Width: match the screen to the desk. A 1600mm desk takes a 1600mm screen, a 1200mm desk a 1200mm screen, and so on, so the screen covers the whole desk without overhanging.

Height: taller screens give more privacy and absorb more sound. Pick a height that blocks eye contact when people are seated. Our desk divider sizes guide covers the common heights and widths.

How many: on a bank of desks where people face each other, you need one front screen along the middle for each pair of desks. For example, a bank of six desks, three facing three, needs three front screens. Add side screens between neighbours if you want more privacy, or to create individual workstations.

FAQs

What height desk divider do I need?

For most desks, 400mm above the desk gives privacy when seated without blocking light. Choose 500–600mm for call centres or where you need more privacy and noise reduction. See our desk divider sizes guide.

Do desk dividers reduce noise?

Acoustic desk dividers do. Their sound-absorbing core soaks up speech between neighbouring desks, so calls and conversations carry less. Thicker screens absorb more: our 70mm Muffle and Hush screens absorb the most. Budget fabric screens mainly add privacy. Read more: do acoustic desk dividers actually reduce noise?

Will desk screen clamps fit my desk?

Our clamp-on desk screens come with clamps that fit most standard office desks; Edge Fabric 38 clamps suit desks 17–28mm thick. If you can’t clamp to your desk, choose a freestanding or slide-on desk screen, or contact us about other fixings.

Desk mounted or freestanding – which is better?

Desk-mounted screens clamp to the desk for a fixed, tidy finish and suit permanent layouts. Freestanding desk screens sit on the desk with no fixings, so they suit hot desks, rented furniture and desks you can’t clamp to.

How quickly can you deliver desk screens?

Our fast-delivery desk screens are in stock for quick dispatch. Our own UK-made ranges are made to order: Edge desk screens are dispatched in 5–10 working days and Muffle and Hush desk screens in 10–15 working days.

Can you make desk screens to a custom size?

Yes. We make bespoke desk screens of any type and size, for any budget, including full workstation screens. Send us your desk sizes and we’ll send you a quote. Contact us.

Are desk screens, desk dividers and desk separators the same thing?

Yes. Desk screens, desk dividers, desk separators and desk partitions are different names for the same product: a panel that fits on or between desks to give each person their own space.

What is a desk privacy screen?

A desk privacy screen is a desk divider tall enough to block sightlines when you are seated, usually 400 to 650mm above the desk. Acoustic versions also absorb speech, so conversations carry less between desks. See our acoustic desk screens.

Desk dividers and desk screens for open-plan offices

Desk dividers give each person a defined workspace, cut visual distraction and, in acoustic versions, absorb the speech noise that travels across open-plan desks. Panelscreens has supplied desk screens to UK offices, schools, call centres and the public sector for over 20 years.

Choose clamp-on desk screens for a fixed, tidy finish, freestanding desk dividers when you can’t drill or clamp, and slide-on dividers for quick changes. Our acoustic Muffle, Hush and Edge desk screens are made to order in the UK in the size and fabric you choose, and budget desk dividers keep costs down for larger fit-outs. For the quietest offices, pair desk screens with acoustic wall panels to absorb echo.
