Do Acoustic Desk Dividers Actually Reduce Noise?

Yes, acoustic desk dividers do reduce noise, but not in the way many people expect. They will not make a desk silent. What they do is soak up the voices and phone calls closest to you, so the office sounds calmer and conversations stop carrying from desk to desk.
This guide explains what desk dividers can and cannot do, what makes one work better than another, and how to get the most from them. You can browse our acoustic desk screens as you read.
An acoustic desk divider has a sound-absorbing core wrapped in fabric. When someone speaks across the desk, part of that sound passes into the core instead of bouncing off a hard surface. Less sound reaches the person opposite, and less is reflected back into the room.
The result is a quieter background and fewer distractions. People notice it most in busy open-plan offices and call centres, where many conversations happen at once.

Desk dividers absorb sound; they do not seal it in. Sound still travels over the top and around the ends of the screen. So they will not stop a colleague two desks away hearing a phone call word for word.
For calls and private meetings, an enclosed office pod or phone booth is the right tool. Desk dividers are for everyday background noise.
Some acoustic products are tested and given an NRC (noise reduction coefficient) rating, from 0 to 1. The higher the number, the more sound the material absorbs. For example, our Softline 30 desk screen is rated 0.36 NRC.
Where a screen has no published rating, compare the core thickness and what it is made from. A thicker, denser sound-absorbing core will generally absorb more.
| Screen | Thickness | Good for |

| Edge Fabric 38 | 38mm | Budget-friendly screening, 12 colours |

Yes. They absorb nearby speech and reduce echo, which makes an open-plan office noticeably calmer. They do not soundproof a desk, so pair them with a phone booth for private calls.
Generally, yes. A thicker sound-absorbing core absorbs more sound, especially deeper voices. Choose 50mm to 70mm screens for busy offices.
Between 400mm and 600mm above the desk suits most offices. Taller screens give more privacy and block more direct sound between seated colleagues.
Most of our desk screens clamp onto the desk edge. Check your desk thickness first: Edge Fabric 38 clamps fit desks 17mm to 28mm thick, and our Muffle 70mm clamps fit desks 28mm to 70mm thick.
